Uitvlugt 1989, 30 Years Old, Silver Seal, Guyana

Decided to do a re-tasting of the Silver Seal Uitvlugt 1989. Just a little recap that this rum was distilled in 1989 at the Uitvlugt Distillery using the four-column French Savalle still, although the marque remains unknown. The rums were then bottled in 2020 from a single cask #7, and limited to 206 bottles in total.

On the nose you are greeted with caramel, toffees, followed by deeper notes of coffee, chocolates, some anise, and pleasant sultanas at the end. Its really pleasant and just draws you in for a sip. When tasted, again those sweet rich caramel notes present themselves upfront, with a creamy mouthfeel. In the middle the rum turns into a whole different creature, with the bitter wood-flavours showing, iodine and leather. Thankfully the sweet notes of raisins resurface at the end, with some tannins, finishing almost like a dry port! Conclusion - not one of my favourites, but thats purely personal. The nose was great, but the palate was not to my liking because of that pungent middle. Nonetheless still a very good rum, especially for those who prefer the funkier high ester-styles that pack a real punch!
